OBERKOCHEN/Germany, SHANGHAI/China, 06.12.2004. Carl Zeiss opened its first production facility for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) in China today. Carl Zeiss IMT Shanghai Co. Ltd., headquartered in the Waigaoqiao free trade zone in Pudong, Shanghai, will manufacture Contura active scanning CMMs.

The rapid development of China’s production sector in recent years has led to an enormous increase in need for CMMs. The car industry, in particular, generates great demand for high-end measuring technology. Carl Zeiss opened this factory as a commitment to the region. It also provides strategic access to the Chinese market and enables the company to satisfy the growing hunger for CMMs.

Chinese users in this rapidly developing industry require higher measuring accuracy and speed. They have recognized the advantages of scanning technology over conventional touch-trigger probing technology. With Contura, featuring active-scanning technology, Carl Zeiss is able to provide its Chinese customers scanning technology at an affordable price. Contura is equipped with the patented VAST® XT high-speed scanning probe head, the C99 controller and CAD-based Calypso® software, enabling it to deliver an outstanding price/performance ratio. Calypso® now offers object-oriented metrology software in Chinese for the first time.

Maintaining a production facility in China also allows Carl Zeiss to provide local customers with high-quality products, superior after-sales service and an efficient supply of spare parts. It also lays the foundation required to enhance our partnerships with Chinese customers, while bringing Carl Zeiss closer to its goal of presenting local customers with outstanding service and support.

Carl Zeiss’ know-how as a manufacturer of high-tech optical instruments and precision mechanical instruments is rooted in 160 years of tradition. The company’s products have been available in China for 100 years. Carl Zeiss CMMs are unparalleled in the eyes of its Chinese customers, particularly in the field of industrial measuring technology. Carl Zeiss presented its first coordinate measuring machine with CNC control in 1973 – the UMM 500. Since then, coordinate measuring machines have become an integral component in industrial quality control.
